Don’t Trade Conviction for Comfort
The first reading at Mass on Saturday, June 6th came from the Second Letter to Timothy, where Paul warns that a time will come when people will no longer tolerate sound doctrine. Instead, they will seek teachers who tell them what they want to hear, shaping truth around their desires rather than shaping their desires around God’s truth.
We are living in that time now. The noise of the world grows louder, and the temptation to trade conviction for comfort grows stronger. But Paul doesn’t leave us helpless, he tells us exactly what to do. Stand firm. Stay rooted. Keep your eyes on Jesus. Proclaim the truth with patience, courage, and love.
To overcome this age of selective truth, we must anchor ourselves in a deep understanding of Scripture, remain faithful to the teachings of the Church, and surround ourselves with people who strengthen our walk with Jesus rather than dilute it. We must pray for discernment, guard our hearts from spiritual drift, and live the Gospel with a consistency that speaks louder than the culture around us.
The world may chase what is convenient, but we are called to what is true. And when we hold fast to Christ, He holds fast to us.
