Growing Up Blessed: The Gift of Lifelong Friendships

Teaching: It’s often not until later in life that we realize just how blessed we were growing up. Time has a way of revealing the quiet gifts that were always there; friendships, families, neighborhoods, and the faith that held it all together.

Story: A few weeks ago, I received a phone call that brought all those blessings rushing back. It was from three brothers who lived next door to me throughout my entire childhood. We spent countless hours together in our early years playing wiffleball and football in the street, shooting hoops in the driveway, roller-skating, swimming in each other’s pools and just hanging around together most days.

As we reminisced, it felt like time had stood still since those early years. We shared many laughs and recalled countless stories from our younger years, mostly about the sports we played and the adventures we experienced together. We marveled at how those early years helped shape the people we would become. Beneath the humor and nostalgia was something even deeper: a shared gratitude for the blessings we received growing up. Even then, without fully realizing it, God was quietly laying the foundation for our friendships and the faith we would cherish throughout our lives.

Friendships that endure across decades remind us that God places certain people in our lives not merely for a season, but for a lifetime. Lifelong friends witness our growth, our struggles, our successes, and our mistakes. They see our beginnings and, years later, help us appreciate just how far we have come.

When I hung up the phone, I felt a renewed sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the call and the reminder of how blessed I was growing up. Gratitude for our parents who raised us in faith. Gratitude for the way God weaves people into our story long before we fully understand the purpose of their presence.

May we continue to cherish the friendships that have stood the test of time and never forget the quiet ways God has used them to shape our hearts and our lives.

Reflection:

Who are the childhood friends God placed in your life that still shape your heart today, and what blessings do you now recognize from those early years?

How has faith, quietly present in your upbringing, continued to anchor your relationships and guided the way you see lifelong friendships?
