Week 408
Positive Post Sunday, December 22, 2024…. Week 408. As we prepare for the coming of our savior Jesus, I want to share a very positive, inspirational and spiritual trend in sports. I’ve been very humbled by how many players and coaches are giving thanks to God for their success. A prime example is Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson whose first words when interviewed after winning the Mountain West Championship were, “Thank you, Jesus.” He went on to note that Jesus died on the cross and rose three days later, and that’s the God he serves. What an amazing example and role model for his team of young men.

Coaches like Spencer Danielson set an excellent example for their players, teaching them that success is not just about talent and hard work but also about acknowledging the source of their strength. By sharing his faith so openly, he provides his team with a role model who prioritizes spiritual growth alongside athletic achievement.
The rise of sports figures openly expressing their faith and praising Jesus for their achievements is an inspiring phenomenon. It’s heartwarming to see how athletes and coaches are using their platforms to share their beliefs and give credit to their spiritual foundations. This trend reflects a broader cultural shift where faith and sports intersect more visibly and meaningfully.
Athletes like Tim Tebow, who has consistently used his visibility to share his faith, or basketball star Stephen Curry, known for his “I can do all things” motto from Philippians 4:13 (see last week’s PPS), have paved the way for others. And then there’s Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, who often gives glory to God for his successes and challenges on the field. For instance, after winning Super Bowl LVII, Mahomes said, “I want to make sure I’m glorifying Him while I do it.”
Their courage to speak openly about their faith has inspired many and shown that spiritual strength can be as crucial as physical prowess.
Moreover, this trend highlights the role of faith in providing a source of strength, hope, and resilience. In the high-pressure world of sports, where competition is fierce and the stakes are high, grounding oneself in spiritual beliefs can offer a sense of peace and purpose. It’s not just about winning games or championships but also about demonstrating character, integrity, and humility.
This positive and spiritual trend in sports serves as a reminder that faith can be an integral part of our lives, guiding us through challenges and triumphs. It shows that when athletes and coaches put God first, they can inspire countless others to do the same, fostering a culture of gratitude, humility, and faith both on and off the field.
