Week 402

As I have experienced while preparing all my Positive Posts, when I pray and listen to our Lord with an open heart and mind throughout the week, he communicates and responds, often through others.  Some are subtle and others very direct.  All I have to do is absorb what I see, hear and feel, pulling together all the signs, and write about them.

This week, I came across the attached picture of an older man with a cane and young boy with hourglasses on their backs.  As you can see, the older man’s hourglass is running out and the young boy’s is full.  Those looking at this might have varying reactions depending on where they are in their life journeys.  For me, it really hit home.  It reminded me that, although none of us are guaranteed to wake up tomorrow morning, the longer we live the less sand we have in our hourglass.

It’s poignant to reflect on the passage of time and how each of us experience it differently, depending on where we are in our life’s journey. The imagery of the hourglass is powerful; it really brings the concept to life. Time is such an elusive and precious thing, isn’t it?

For an experienced (ok older) man like me, reflecting on the sands of my hourglass often brings a blend of wisdom and urgency. It’s a sobering reminder that, as time slips away, the wealth of experience I’ve accumulated becomes all the more precious. Sharing these lessons, particularly those hard-won insights often realized too late, is not just a duty but a privilege—a gift to pass on to the younger generation. Here are a few reflections I’ve gathered over the years, deeply rooted in faith:

Value of Relationships: One of life’s greatest treasures lies in the relationships we build and nurture. Faith teaches us the importance of love, forgiveness, and compassion. Too often, we take our loved ones for granted, forgetting that the sands of their hourglasses are also slipping away. Cherishing every moment and mending broken bonds is a lesson best learned sooner rather than later.

Faith in Adversity: Life’s trials and tribulations are inevitable, but our faith can be our anchor. In hindsight, I see that in the most challenging times my faith grew stronger. Trusting in God’s plan, even when it’s hard to see the path ahead, can bring a profound sense of peace and purpose.

Living with Purpose: It’s easy to get caught up in the pursuit of success and material wealth. However, the real essence of a fulfilling life lies in living with purpose and aligning our actions with our faith. This often means serving others, spreading kindness, and making a positive impact in our communities.

Embracing Vulnerability: As men, we’re often conditioned to be stoic and self-reliant. But true strength comes from embracing our vulnerabilities and seeking support when needed. Faith encourages us to lean on one another and recognize that we’re stronger together.

Legacy of Faith: Finally, leaving a legacy of faith for future generations is something I hold dear. Sharing our beliefs, values, and experiences can inspire and guide those who come after us. It’s about planting seeds of faith that will continue to grow long after our hourglass has emptied.

Every moment is an opportunity to reflect, grow, and share the wisdom we’ve gathered. It’s never too late to start, and every lesson passed on is a gift that can shape the sands of time for others.

I also found a few other lists that might be of interest, not only to those in my generation, but also to those up-and-coming generations who want to learn from us.  As you can see by the titles, they are all focused on “learning too late”.  The wise will take note and action while their hourglass is still filled with sand!

To the younger generations: How do you listen to God, and learn from others with more experience as the sand in your hourglass continues to pour?
