Week 389
Positive post Sunday, August 11, 2024…. Week 389. I’m sure you are familiar with the saying, “absence makes the heart grow fonder”. This saying suggests that when people are apart, they often appreciate each other more and feel a stronger connection. This can happen because the time apart allows individuals to reflect on their feelings and the value of the relationship.
The Bible addresses the concept of absence and longing in several ways, often highlighting how separation can deepen love and appreciation. As an example, in John 16:7, Jesus tells His disciples that it is for their good that He is going away, as His departure will allow the Holy Spirit to come to them. This separation ultimately strengthens their faith and relationship with God. The Bible acknowledges the pain of absence but also emphasizes the growth, reflection, and deeper connections that can result from it. How appropriate as we await the second coming of our savior Jesus (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18).
From the Bible to everyday life. Here’s some perspective on how being apart from those you love, although difficult and fraught with feelings of longing, can build even stronger relationships.
- Reflection and Appreciation: When we’re apart from someone we care about, we often have more time to reflect on our feelings and the positive aspects of the relationship. This reflection can lead to a deeper appreciation for the person and the bond you share.
- Anticipation and Excitement: Being apart can build anticipation for the next meeting. The excitement of reuniting can strengthen the emotional connection and make the time spent together even more special.
- Personal Growth: Time apart allows individuals to grow and develop independently. This personal growth can bring new perspectives and experiences to the relationship, enriching it further.
- Strengthening Bonds: Overcoming the challenges of distance can strengthen the bond between people. It requires effort, communication, and trust, which can deepen the relationship.
- Renewed Connection: Absence can also help rekindle feelings that might have become routine or taken for granted. The joy of reuniting can remind people of why they value each other so much.
Now before you pack your bags for that trip with the guys or girls, or in my case get on my bike every day for 6 hours (I wish), remember that like most things in life, moderation is often appropriate. In my defense, when I ride my bike with my brothers, especially on the Bagel Ride on Saturday mornings, it strengthens my Triangle of Life: Faith, Family and Fitness, keeping me physically, mentally, and spiritually strong so I can continue to serve God and my loved ones. That being said, times of absence are not intended to shirk our responsibilities, but in moderation and as the saying goes, they can make our hearts grow fonder.
How do you give your loved ones time for personal growth which in turn strengthens your relationship?
Have you ever experienced that feeling of joy and love when you return home after being away from that special someone in your life?
