Week 32

Positive post Sunday, September 24, 2017-Week 32.

For this week’s post, I am sharing the following safety message I sent to the SoCalGas leadership team. Bottom line message, make healthy choices and take care of your body and mind, your loved ones are depending on you!

To SoCalGas leadership: For this week’s safety message, I have chosen to focus on health and wellness, health being a state of body and wellness a state of being. I have found both health and wellness to be foundational elements of safety. As many of us have seen, and even experienced, poor health and wellness can lead to unsafe conditions and potentially injury. Conversely, good health and sound wellness can drive strong safety results and prevent injury and illness.

We live in a very busy and “on the go” world, with instant gratification and most things only a cellphone or computer click away. Unfortunately, our high paced lives both at work and home leave us vulnerable to forgetting to take care of ourselves. We are at risk of sacrificing our health and wellness (e.g. I can reschedule my physical exam, I’ll postpone my dentist appointment, I can exercise later, I’ll just grab something to eat on the run etc.). We’re constantly doing more, with less time and it’s important to take a pause and give our bodies and minds a quick tune-up.

Here are some health and wellness tips:

 – Treat wellness appointments/check-ups with the same importance as critical business appointments

 – Practice preventive healthcare, it can help avoid illness and detect problems before symptoms are visible

 – Take mental breaks during the day (similar to physical breaks from the computer encouraged by Remedy)

 – Make opportunities to exercise (Walking meetings, Family fitness challenges)

– Join the LLS bowling event on October 11th and Light the Night Walk on November 4th (sorry I couldn’t resist the plug J)

 – Make healthy choices when ordering food and drinks for meetings (drink more water)

 – Get quality sleep by clearing your mind before going to bed

It is my sincere hope that this health, wellness and safety message will encourage many of us to pause for a moment and assess our own health and wellness. And, most importantly, take action. If at least one member of our work family makes a positive change to improve their health and wellness, then this message has been successful. If you don’t do it for yourself, do it for your loved ones, they are depending on you!
