Week 242

Positive post Sunday, October 10, 2021- Week 242.

Wellness helps prevent Illness.  While on one of our Sunday morning walks, Michele Lomen Rendler and I saw the sign below in the front yard of one of our neighbor’s homes.  And coincidentally a few weeks ago, Fontello Allen, a high school brother of mine posted it on Facebook.

Although it seems obvious and sounds simple to do, many of us struggle to find time to focus on our wellness.  This has been exacerbated during the pandemic.  I’m sure you have heard someone say, “I gained the COVID 19”.  The most challenging times in our lives are also the times when it is most important for us to focus on our wellness.

I have a theory on wellness.  I call it the “Triangle of Health”.  Perhaps it’s just recognition of key elements that can impact our wellness.  The three sides of the triangle are food, exercise and sleep.  Our goal should be to eat healthy, exercise regularly and sleep well.  This will minimize our daily stress, leading to a healthy lifestyle and physical and mental wellness.

Unfortunately, for various reasons, many of us find it challenging to manage all sides of the Triangle of Health which weakens the triangle and often results in physical or mental Illness.  As an example, it’s during the most stressful times in our lives that we find it most difficult to find the time to eat right, exercise or get quality sleep.  Yet, these are the times in our lives it is critical that we focus on eating healthy, increase our exercise and sleep well to counter the stress and anxiety we are facing.

There are many resources and articles written on wellness and physical and mental health.  One I particularly like is “Tips for Maintaining Mental Health and Wellness”, posted by HarborChase.  Here’s the link: Tips for Maintaining Mental Health and Wellness (harborchase.com).

In addition to reminding me that today, October 10th is World Mental Health Day, established in 1992 to raise awareness of mental health issues, the post shares the following 5 Tips for Promoting Mental Health:

  1. Get Plenty of Exercise
  2. Practice Gratitude
  3. Stay Connected With Others
  4. Find Purpose and Meaning
  5. Know When To Seek Help

Remember, if you don’t make time for your wellness, you will be forced to make time for your illness!

Your loved ones are counting on you to manage your Triangle of Health.
