Week 178

Positive post Sunday, July 19, 2020- Week 178.

Stress has always been a challenge for many and a lifelong struggle for some, and with the current pandemic this has only been amplified.  The good news is that there are ways to cope with stress and, according to digital anthropologist Rahaf Harfoush, through proper recovery time we can even increase our innovation and output.

Two weeks ago, in Positive post Sunday Week 176 (July 5, 2020), I shared an article from one of my favorite monthly reads Granted, by Adam Grant, a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.  Grant shared an article by Kari Leibowitz and Alia Crum titled, In Stressful Times, Make Stress Work for You.  Here is the link: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/01/well/mind/coronavirus-stress-management-anxiety-psychology.html

In the same July edition of Granted, there was another article addressing stress.  This one focuses on the workplace, which for many of us is our home as we continue to manage through the pandemic.  The article is written by writer and author Lindsey Tramuta who interviews Digital anthropologist Rahaf Harfoush.

The article titled, To Avoid Burnout, Work Less and Ignore ‘Productivity Propaganda’, focuses on the importance of recovery time and how it is key to innovation and output.  I encourage you to read this short article.  Here are a few excerpts:

  • We have to give ourselves the time to shift from a more-is-better approach to internalizing the idea that recovery is as valuable as the work
  • Operating as usual will not only negatively affect your work but could compromise your health
  • It’s crucial to recover hard when you play hard.

Are you giving yourself sufficient and meaningful recovery time to prevent burnout and improve innovation and productivity?
