Week 245

Positive post Sunday, October 31, 2021- Week 245.

Happy “all hallows’ eve” or “all saints’ eve.”!  As we dust off those boxes of costumes in the attic or go online to find new costumes for our little ones as they prepare to go out and Trick or Treat this evening, let’s not forget the origin of this Holy day.

The Catholic origins of Halloween date back more than 1300 years ago during the vigil of the Feast of All Saints.  It was instituted by Pope Gregory III when, in the eighth century, he dedicated a chapel in St. Peter’s Basilica to all the saints.  A century later, Pope Gregory IV declared this celebration a holy day of obligation.

I’m hopeful that as my family and friends dawn their creative costumes and attend parties, and our little ones go home to home filling their bags with candy this evening, they also pause for a quiet moment to reflect on the true meaning of this holy day.  I pray that they join me in expressing gratitude for the many Saints and Souls who have gone before us.  I also pray that they all enjoy the fun and return home safely.

How are you celebrating “all hallows eve” today?

How will you give thanks to the many Saints and Souls that have gone before us?
