Week 325
Positive post Sunday, May 21, 2023- Week 325.
Two weeks ago, I shared some of my favorite quotes and sayings, and last week I shared a powerful song “Empty Words” by Lindy Cofer. The quotes and saying, and especially this song, reminded me how important it is that we choose our words carefully. Mel Schwartz L.C.S.W. in his article titled, “Our Words Matter”, notes that words are our most powerful way of communicating and it’s important to pay close attention to them. Here’s the link to his article: Our Words Matter | Psychology Today. I encourage you to read it, you may gain a new perspective on the words, “I love you” and “How are you?”
One of my favorite words is “Intention”. Understanding one’s intention related to an action provides a clear line of sight on what they mean and how to react and respond. This is especially true when receiving feedback. As an example, knowing if your coach or boss is providing you feedback with the intent to help you improve and grow as opposed to demean or ridicule you would be helpful to know. For those of us who are coaches and bosses, it is important that we choose our words wisely and communicate our intent when providing coaching and mentoring.
Here’s another perspective on intention. Even if we have good intentions, they are useless if we don’t take action. You know the saying, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions”. Don’t forget the rest of the saying, “The road to heaven is paved with good actions”. So, it’s not only important that we have good and honorable intentions, but we also need to act on them as we continue our journey to the promised land.
Do you say “Love ya” or “I love you” to your loved ones (read Schwartz’ article)?
How are you checking in to make sure your actions are consistent with your intent?
