Week 262

Positive post Sunday, February 27, 2022- Week 262.

More inspiration and thoughtful reflection from another ride on my NordicTrack this past week. I seem to be getting more than just Fitness when riding my stationary bike. I’m connecting with all 3 sides of the Triangle of Life; Faith, Family and Fitness (See PPSs for weeks 46 on December 31, 2017, 47 on January 7, 2018, 48 on January 14, 2018 and 98 on December 30, 2018 for more details on the Triangle of Life).

I just finished a 12-stage series of road and mountain bike rides all over the Lake Tahoe area with iFIT trainer and Two-time World Champion skier Chris Davenport. If you Google Chris, you will see that he has a long list of skiing accomplishments on mountains and slopes all over the world. He clearly has experience setting and achieving goals and his accomplishments descending mountain peaks globally, including skiing all fifty-four of Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks in less than one year, certainly required a great deal of planning.

Back to cycling! During the Lake Tahoe Emerald Bay road bike stage, Chris shared his thoughts about goals and planning. He made a statement that I have heard and seen quoted many times, “A goal without a plan is a wish”. For some reason, hearing it from Chris in the context of sports, especially cycling (and skiing where lack of planning could be fatal), really made me think broader about goal setting and the importance of planning. It also reminded me of the quote from Benjamin Franklin, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail”.

I am certainly well versed in setting goals and achieving them through planning in the business environment, but Chris reminded me that it is equally, if not more, important to also set goals and put plans in place to achieve them in our personal and spiritual lives. If we place as much rigor and structure into setting goals and making plans to achieve them in our personal and spiritual lives as we do at work, we can turn wishes into success and growth and strengthen our Triangle of Life.

What personal and spiritual goals have you set in your life?

Do you have plans in place to achieve your goals?

Are you following your plans, turning your wishes into results and accomplishments?
