Week 173

Positive post Sunday, June 14, 2020- Week 173.

On March 19th, almost 3 months ago, the Governor of California signed an Executive Order that required residents to “Stay at Home” due to the spread of COVID-19.  As with most life altering governmental decision, there are many diverse and opposing opinions about the need for isolation.  Opinions range from this is unnecessary and a conspiracy to this is very serious and we are on the brink of the extinction of the human race.

As with most things in life, the truth usually lies in the middle.  With roughly 7.9 million cases and over 400 thousand deaths worldwide to date, the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic is unquestionably a significant health threat that needs to be taken seriously.  As evidenced by many states seeing a resurgence of cases with the recent reopening of businesses and public sites, it’s important that we stay vigilant and follow the well-established protocols, like handwashing, face coverings, physical distancing and self-health screening before leaving home.  Following these protocols is not just for our own health but also a sign of respect for others as we continue to venture from our homes.

Speaking of home, here’s the positive part of this post.  Although many have felt cooped up and isolated during the stay at home order, this has also been an opportunity to spend quality family time.  It’s been refreshing to get back to the basics.  You know, the simple things like doing a puzzle, playing a game, and yes, even sharing a meal together.  And then there has been the new experiences like attending virtual Mass as a family and virtual family get togethers with family all over the country.  Thinking through all these experiences reminded me of the value of family traditions, and so I decided to start a new one.  Like many of you I’m sure, we have literally thousands of photos, both hard copies and digital and it’s overwhelming to think of trying to organize all of them.  So, we’re going to start the tradition of Family Photo Hour each Sunday night.  Afterall, Rome wasn’t built in a day😊

I’m hopeful that as we continue to transition back outside our homes and assimilate into our new normal for social engagement, we don’t lose sight of the value of quality in person family time at home.  I also hope we continue to leverage technologies like Teams, Skype, Facetime and Duo to stay connected to family and friends that are not close.  Although not as good as in person, a quick virtual check in with family can make all the difference in the world, especially to family members who are most vulnerable and need to continue to limit their time outside their homes.

What traditions have you started during the Stay at Home order?  Will you continue them?

What family or friends needs virtual check ins?  Will you take the time to do it and make a difference in their lives?
