Week 152
Positive post Sunday, January 12, 2020- Week 152.
You have likely heard the saying “You are what you eat”. I’d suggest a similar saying is also true “You are what you listen to”. Music can be inspiring, uplifting and even life changing. It’s been said that music heals the heart and sometimes music is the only medicine the heart and soul need. Many people listen to music to escape the challenges faced in this complex world we live in. Others listen to music to relax, be comforted or to be motivated. Why do you listen to music?
Unfortunately, some music can be harmful, stimulating negative emotions like anger, frustration, depression, hatred and fear. It is not uncommon to like a song because you enjoy the melody or rhythm without even listening to the lyrics. I encourage you to take the time to listen to the lyrics to your favorite songs and make sure they are positive and represent your beliefs. Perhaps more important, pay attention to the music your children are listening to, it will shape their future.
I have a few recommendations for songs with lyrics that I find to be inspirational and that are representative of my beliefs. Late last year, Michele and I took our daughter Kristy and three of our grandchildren to a MercyMe concert. The concert was amazing and very uplifting, and although I found all the songs to be thoughtful and inspirational, a few stood out, “I Can Only Imagine”, and “Flawless”. Here are the links to videos of both songs: I Can Only Imagine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_lrrq_opng and Flawless: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjLlLPZderk. By the way, if you have not seen the movie I Can Only Imagine, I encourage you to do so.
Two other songs you might find inspirational are “Only Jesus”, by Casting Crowns and “Haven’t Seen it Yet”, by Danny Gokey.
What music do you listen to? Have you ever listened to the lyrics? Are they appropriate, thoughtful, inspirational?
